Churches of San Miguel de Allende

Churches are an inseparable part of the architectural and cultural landscape of San Miguel de Allende. As I walked through the city, I encountered them in squares, along narrow streets and behind the colourful facades of the historic centre. Built and transformed over different periods, each has its own architectural character and history. On this page, I have brought together six of the churches that I photographed during my walks through San Miguel de Allende.

 These events, which underwent a long preparation process, could only be described in more than one page.

  • Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel

    With its soaring neo-Gothic facade of pink stone, the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel has become the unmistakable symbol of San Miguel de Allende. Rising above the Jardin Principal, its distinctive towers dominate the historic centre and define the city's celebrated skyline.

  • Templo de San Rafael

    Standing beside the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel, the Templo de San Rafael is one of the historic centre's older religious buildings. Its more restrained architecture and distinctive clock tower create an interesting contrast with the elaborate neo-Gothic facade of its famous neighbour.

  • Templo del Oratorio de San Felipe Neri

    The Templo del Oratorio de San Felipe Neri is distinguished by its richly carved stone facade and the warm colours typical of San Miguel de Allende. Behind its monumental exterior lies an equally impressive interior, reflecting the religious art and architectural traditions of colonial Mexico.

    • Templo de la Inmaculada Concepcion

      Known locally as Las Monjas, the Templo de la Inmaculada Concepcion is easily recognised by its large and elegant dome. Its architecture adds a distinctive silhouette to San Miguel de Allende, while the interior preserves the quiet atmosphere and artistic heritage of this historic religious complex.

    • Templo de San Francisco

      The Templo de San Francisco stands out for its elaborate stone facade, filled with carved figures and ornamental details. Built over several decades, the church combines different architectural influences and offers one of the finest examples of richly decorated religious architecture in San Miguel de Allende.

    • Parroquia de San Antonio de Padua

      Away from the busiest streets of the historic centre, the Parroquia de San Antonio de Padua reflects another side of religious life in San Miguel de Allende. Its spacious interior, traditional altars and neighbourhood setting make it both a place of worship and part of the everyday life of the city.
