Guanajuato is the capital of the state of the same name, located in central Mexico. Situated in a mountainous region, the city has narrow and winding streets. Its population is approximately 170,000. With its colorful houses and historical architecture, it is considered one of the most aesthetically pleasing cities in Mexico. Guanajuato's history dates back to the 16th century. The discovery of rich silver deposits in the region led to rapid growth. By the 18th century, it had become one of the world's most important silver production centers. Furthermore, Guanajuato was the scene of one of the first and most important events of the Mexican War of Independence, which began in 1810. Miguel Hidalgo, one of the leaders of the independence movement, launched a major resistance against Spanish rule here. Guanajuato is one of Mexico's most important cultural and artistic centers. Its best-known event is the Cervantino International Festival. This festival is held every October and attracts artists from all over the world. The city has numerous theaters, museums, and art galleries. It also has a young and vibrant atmosphere because it is a university city. Guanajuato's architecture largely bears the traces of the Spanish colonial period. Stone structures, Baroque-style churches, and colorful houses form the character of the city. The city also has underground tunnel roads built to ease vehicle traffic. This feature makes Guanajuato unique in Mexico. Important Tourist Attractions Alhondiga de Granaditas: A historical building that played an important role in the War of Independence. Callejon del Beso (Kissing Street): Known for its love legend. University of Guanajuato: One of the city's landmarks. Juarez Theatre: One of the most magnificent theaters in Mexico. Mummy Museum (Museo de las Momias): An interesting museum displaying naturally mummified bodies. While mining was prominent in the past, today tourism, education, and culture form the basis of the economy. The people are attached to their traditions, and festivals are an important part of daily life. Guanajuato's historic city center and mining regions were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988. This ensures the city's international protection and promotion.
