The Gypsy Chronicles presented a selection from my long-term documentary work with Roma communities in Turkey. The archived page introduces the project through the wedding I attended as the guest of a Roma friend in 1999. What began with a few photographs gradually developed into a continuing engagement with Roma life, celebrations, family relationships and community.

The publication quoted my view that this culture can teach us many things at a time when our own lives are becoming increasingly complex. I was particularly interested in the strength of closely connected family and community structures and in what can be learned by becoming acquainted with a culture from within.

The original page also linked to my Gypsies and Wedding exhibition book and to the Cultural Bridges interview about the project. All photographs on the archived publication were credited to Aydın Çetinbostanoğlu.

“Invited as a guest by a Roma friend to a wedding in 1999, Aydın Çetinbostanoğlu took a few photographs, became interested in Roma culture and continued to photograph. His work reminds some of the films of Kusturica.”

Gypsy Chronicles

This revised presentation uses the original photographs from my archive. The opening image places the Roma neighbourhood within the modern city surrounding it, before the sequence moves into everyday life, family, music, celebrations and weddings. Click any photograph to enlarge.
