Mısır Çarşısı / Spice Bazaar

Published in Goldnews, the magazine of the Istanbul Chamber of Jewelers, in July 2009, this feature tells the story of Istanbul’s historic Mısır Çarşısı (Spice Bazaar). The article recalls the bazaar’s connection with the New Mosque complex: construction begun under Safiye Sultan was interrupted for decades and later completed under Turhan Hatice Sultan.

The scents and colors of spices, together with the glitter of jewelry and the dense daily life of the market, inspired the title Market of Dreams. Text by Lemi Özgen; photographs by Aydın Çetinbostanoğlu. The original publication was presented in Turkish and English.
