Catacombs Visit of Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel , San Miguel de Allende  01.Nov.2025 - Mexico

The catacombs of the Parish of the Archangel Saint Michael were opened to the public on November 1st and 2nd. These crypts remain closed to the public throughout the year and are only opened during the Day of the Dead so that people can visit the tombs located beneath the parish. The entrance is in front of the main altar, where wooden doors rise up revealing the tunnel that leads to the catacombs, whose construction is attributed to the Guanajuato architect Francisco Eduardo Tresguerras, who worked on it in 1930. Some of the figures who rest in this place are the former president of Mexico Anastasio Bustamante, who fought against the insurgents from 1810 to 1821, in 1830 he obtained the presidency, but in 1833 he had to leave it due to the protests against him after ordering the assassination of Vicente Guerrero; he returned to the presidency from 1837 to 1839 and when he retired he came to live in San Miguel de Allende in a house on San Francisco street, when he died his body was buried in the crypt of the parish and above it there is a flag of Mexico. In the place there is a window, below it is the tomb of Father Juan Manuel Villegas, parish priest of the same parish of San Miguel in the years 1736 to 1776 and it is said that he was also commissioner of the Holy Inquisition, originally he had been buried in the parish cemetery and in 1842 his remains were moved to the crypt. In this wonderful place are the remains of Father Francisco de Uranga, who died in 1830 and was parish priest of San Miguel when the independence movement began. One of the tombs that stands out is that of Father Jose M. Vallejo, who died in 1928.(https://oem.com.mx/elsoldelbajio/local/abren-al-publico-catacumbas-de-la-parroquia-de-san-miguel-de-allende-15228312)
