May Day

For its 1 May 2015 issue, BirGün published a selection of my May Day photographs from different years. The feature brought together images from my archive that had not previously been published in the newspaper.

May Day has been one of the recurring subjects in my documentary photography. Rather than concentrating only on the public spectacle of the demonstrations, I have tried to record the people, gestures, encounters and atmosphere that give each gathering its character.
