Abridged 0_39: The Never Never
Abridged 0_39: The Never Never included one of my photographs from a Yazidi refugee camp in Beşiri, Batman. The contents page lists “Aydin Cetinbostanoglu” on page 16, and the publication also preserves my short account of the girl I photographed. The image and its story seem particularly at home within an issue titled The Never Never: a publication concerned with uncertain, imagined and elusive worlds.
The Little Psychic
On my last day at the camp, I was told about a young girl who could predict the future. Her father held the rank of a pir within the Yazidi religious community. I was told that on Wednesday, a sacred day for Yazidis, she would tell people who came to her what awaited them; but they first had to visit her on Tuesday and speak with her.
I was leaving the camp on Saturday, so I had no opportunity to experience this myself. Even so, she kindly agreed to stand in front of her tent and let me photograph her. That brief encounter became The Little Psychic.
