Labor and Solidarity Day  Istanbul May 1, 2010

After 33 years, May 1 was legally celebrated again. It was a good opportunity to complete my documentary work and I visited the confederation and got permission again. Everything was very different. 3 separate confederations instead of one confederation. Color digital printed posters instead of handmade black and white banners, fewer workers, more students.

It was a nice coincidence to meet with old mayor of Istanbul during the 1977 celebrations. I spoke with Ahmet Isvan, the former mayor of Istanbul, who prevented a massacre, perhaps 33 years ago, and reminded him of that day. He said, "You know what." "That day, I was assaulted during talks with the police in the square". This phrase describes that period very well. The mayor of the city, who did not want any more deaths and injuries, has been assaulted by the police during the compromise. Another nice coincidence was to meet Timur Selcuk, the musician whose songs we were happy with in our youth. He sang the March 1 anthem accompanied by the choir with the piano. I took the last pictures of him. He passed away in 2020.
